Options for Accessing Your POSIM Database Remotely

Although we only officially support connecting to POSIM on your local network, there are a few options you can choose from to access your database remotely:

Recommended Method

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A VPN will act as a bridge between two separate internet connections. When the VPN is connected, those two networks will virtually be connected together and it will seem like you are on the same local network at different locations. Click here for more information on VPN.

Pros to VPN:

  • Secure.
  • PCI Compliant.
  • Direct access to the database.
  • Able to connect to your entire network.
  • Very easy to use once it is setup.
  • Able to connect with Mac, Windows, and iOS devices.

Cons to VPN:

  • Advanced setup. Requires assistance from a network specialist.
  • Can be expensive. Requires a static IP from your ISP and additional hardware/software.
  • Not supported by POSIM, LLC. If there are issues, you will need to work with your network specialist.

Other Methods

Port Forwarding

Port Forwarding means that you are allowing outside network access, through a specific port, into your local network. This is done by opening (or forwarding) a network port through your firewall(s). Click here for more information on Port Forwarding.

POSIM connects to the Servers using ports 13305 & 13306
iPOSIM connects to POSIM using port 13307

Pros to Port Forwarding:

  • Cheaper than a VPN. In most cases, you will not need additional hardware/software.
  • Direct access to the database.
  • Able to connect with Mac, Windows, and iOS devices.

Cons to Port Forwarding:

  • NOT PCI Compliant!
  • Not as secure as a VPN.
  • Advanced setup. Requires assistance from a network specialist.
  • For more stability you will need a Static IP from your ISP.
  • Not supported by POSIM, LLC. If there are issues, you will need to work with your network specialist.

 

Screen Sharing / Remote Desktop

Screen Sharing is a popular method for remote access. This means that you will be remotely viewing and controlling the screen of a computer at your office. Click here for more information on Screen Sharing.

Pros to Screen Sharing:

  • Easiest remote setup.
  • Cheapest remote setup. There are also some free options, such as TeamViewer.
  • Able to connect with Mac, Windows, and iOS devices.

Cons to Screen Sharing:

  • In most cases, the computer you are controlling cannot be used by anyone else at the same time.
  • Not supported by POSIM, LLC. If there are issues, you will need to work with the vendor that provides the service.
